Enrichment
At Higher Walton CE Primary School, we believe strongly in linking learning to real-world experiences and recognise the positive impact these experiences can have on our pupils’ understanding. We place a high priority on providing a broad range of educational opportunities for all our pupils including educational visits, sporting opportunities and theme days to enrich curriculum learning. We recognise that these opportunities are invaluable to all our children, including those who are disadvantaged, and ensure that all children are included in our curriculum enrichment provision.
Most recently, educational visits have taken place to:
• County Hall
• Blackburn Ice Arena
• Blackpool Winter Gardens
• Beacon Fell
• Bowrick Hall
• Cuerden Valley Learning Centre
• University of Central Lancashire
• Local field trips
We also invite a broad range of visitors into our school to talk to children about their experiences or give a real-life perspective on learning. These have included:
• Local Councillor Chris Lomax
• Clergy visits
• A practising Sikh
• A practising Buddhist
• Members of the emergency services
• School nurse
As well as providing opportunities for educational visits and welcoming visitors into school, we also organise regular theme days or weeks. These provide an opportunity to come together as a whole school and deepen learning on a particular theme as well as celebrate pupils’ learning.
Extra-Curricular Activities
We also provide a broad range of extra-curricular activities offered by staff, the local sports partnership or other external agencies. In almost all cases, these are offered at no extra cost to parents to ensure all children who wish to participate can do so. We aim to provide a balance of new and traditional activities to broaden our pupils’ experiences and allow them to develop new skills. Most recently, we have run extra-curricular activities in; multi-skills, choir, dance, football, athletics, dodgeball and music tuition.
